It's like Brokeback Mountain set in Superman's Fortress of Solitude!!!!

I have to say my favourite movies would be "D.E.B.S", "Better Than Chocolate" and "Lost & Delirious".  I can't wait until "Brokeback Mountain" comes out, it would be good to see a movie like this released nationally.  Hopefully it will win an Oscar too so it will get recognised.

Brokeback Mountain? Likewise, I'm looking forward to it. But I'm not tipping it as an Oscar contender until I've seen it, and can tell for myself if it's any good. Or even if it deserves mainstream release. In case it actually isn't as good as is claimed. I won't support it purely on the merits of being a gay film with mainstream leads. That would be ascribing to tokenism, I think. But I do like the synopsis.

Say, we should think of getting a group together for opening night of BBM. I'm having a smallish party on the 12th for the opening night of The Producers in Woden with friends - if anyone else is there or sees me, drop over and say hi! We're planning to sing-a-long.

Yay! D.E.B.S is surely the very epitomy of escapist movies. Loved it.  But frenglish is so a language   :D

On another note, I'm not sure if i'd tip Brokeback Mountain as an Oscar winner either, but I think that's due in main part to it's current critics, who seem, along with (*gasp*) the ABC, to have pegged it as simply "The gay cowboy movie", which seems to be putting many, mainly in the straight community, off seeing it.

On a lighter note, it was quite funny to hear the show on "Straight talk radio", on this movie, with Steven Bennett, the man we all love to hate, and his "wife" *coughtrophywifecoverupcough* Irene.  Somehow, the two seem to consider themselves authorities on the film, without actually having seen it.

"So, Irene, have you seen this movie?"
"No Steven, I haven't, and I don't intend to. This movie is...."

Wow. Subtle

And of course, at the same time, they seem to feel that they have the inalieable right to come out with some of the worst "jokes" heard on talkback radio, mainly relating to the movie's "love is a force of nature" promotional line.

"Love is a force of nature? No, it should be 'sin is a force of nature'"
*Raucus, forced laughter, from Irene*
*Hearty, "manly", stereotypically "straight" laughter from Steven*
"Well, aha, Irene, that's definitely true. But seriously, Irene, it's no laughing matter"
Well, you've got that right Steve, but probably not for the reasons you're thinking  ???

However, laughable and misinformed as the two may be, the fact remains that many people share the opinion of the two, so I wouldn't peg the film as an Oscar winner as yet.  Unfortunately   :(

Guys! You don't have any Sarah Waters on here! She writes lesbian historical novels- usually found in the literature section or in the g/l section at electric shadows bookstore. Yeah, her books Fingersmith, Tipping the Velvet and Affinity are awesome! They look a bit daunting, true, but once you get into them you'll find she's a great writer. Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet (which i'm the proud owner of) have now been adapted into mini-series on the (ABC or SBS??) and are really really good.

I'm a dedicated fan of all things slashy (gay lit) so i'm soooo stoked to find these great suggestions. Um, try Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner series and Mercedes Lackey's Magic's Promise/Pawn/Price series. They have gay central characters and- best of all- are sci-fi fantasy novels.

oh my gosh! How is it that no one has said Summersturm?

"Tobi and Achim have been best mates for years. As cox and oarsman, they have lead their rowing club to win several rowing cups in the past and are now looking forward to win a big regatta in the countryside of Germany. But this trip isn't your usual summer camp experience and problems soon arise. As Achim's relationship with his girlfriend Sandra, who's also on the team, grows more and more serious, Tobi starts to realize that his feelings for Achim run much deeper than he's willing to admit to himself. He feels confused, unsure of himself and increasingly left out by his friend Alex and the team. When Sandra's best friend Anke shows her interest in him, his anxiety starts to grow. When it turns out that the much-anticipated Berlin girls' team has been replaced by a team of athletic, cliché-bursting young gay men, Tobi and his teammates are suddenly forced to grapple with their prejudices, their fears, and, perhaps, their hidden longings. As the tension grows, Tobi, Achim and the others head towards a confrontation as fierce and liberating as the summer storm that's gathering over the lake. And Tobi realizes he has to start facing some facts about himself he didn't dare to face before."

Sorry about being such a long plot summery, it's the best one I could find. I absolutely ADORE this film.. of course for those who don't speak German (moi) you have to settle on subtitles but I for one love foriegn films. Anyway it's a beautiful movie and should totally make the list!

As green_eyes said "Tipping the Velvet" the mini series is brilliant! Its about a womans coming out journey in the 1970's (80's maybe im not good with time periods). Its quite full on in parts but really really good.

And for books "Rubyfruit Jungle" by Rita Mae Brown is awesome! The main character is Mooly Bolt who just wont be constrained by gender expectations and lives how she wants. She loses her virginity to a girl at twelve and doesn't look back, never apologising for who she is. This one is older, published in 1973 but really easy to read and quite inspiring

Hmm, I didn't like Tipping the Velvet as much as Fingersmith.  I thought the book of TTV was better, but that's just my opinion.  And did you mean 1870's?  I think 1970's isn't quite right. . . hahaha.

Bound is a great movie.  Graphic, but very good.  DEBS is funny (I need to get that back off my friend who borrowed it about a year ago!)  Umm, Imagine Me and You but just because Lena Headey is hot.

In terms of books anything by Jeanette Winterson is excellent!  I love her.  However I think apart from her and Sarah Waters there is a huge lack of (current) quality lesbian authors.  Or does anyone know of some other good ones?

I like all the Indie queer movies.

I can't think of any names.. But w/e

Sommersturm is also a very good one. German or something? Lovely storyline about a closeted gay boy who falls in love with his best friend ^_^

Mainstream ones I can think of right now: "Imagine me & You" and "Running with Scissors"

As far as books go, I never read at all really.. So I don't know of any gay books.
Although Running With Scissors is a very nice read ^_^

My appologies if this has already been posted, I haven't had time to read all your brillian posts, but If These Walls Could Talk 2 is an excellent movie about lesbianism.

Ok, this is officially my favourite thread. It's got everything - wonder woman, Forster, Plath, various gay super heroes, comics, gay literature, velvet goldmine: and, apparently, one of my oldest friends - hey hey Tara, you still post on here?!

And Mr.Hapgood, for this:
"I love Mr Gaimans urgent prose, but especially his almond eyes and his rumpled, just-woken-up look."

-you are now my favourite thing to poke.  Such an amazingly appropriate comment I am simply flabbergasted.  Have you ever read the webcomic "Nice Hair"?  Fluffy and hilarious, you will never think the same way about noses again.

Sorry for my exuberance, but these are topics I am quite passionate about.

Way back on the first page of this thread, someone mentioned Well of Loneliness.  Can I just put in here that I not only hated this book, but that it also made me really angry? The copy I read had a blurb that described it as "the bible of lesbianism".  Sorry for the spoiler, those of you who haven't read it, but it is one of the most depressing and pessimistic books I have ever read.  I suppose it was quite sensational, simply because it was about lesbianism, but if I had read this book before I knew what a lesbian was, I would have killed myself.  Seriously.  The basic premise is: "the world won't accept you, you are doomed to be alone, you may as well just top yourself you weirdo pervert".  If that's our bible, well, I'm boycotting our religion...

Has anyone discussed Loving Annabelle on here?  (yeah, I'm too lazy to look)  I thought it was good, but I know a lot of people were disappointed with this film.  Has anyone else seen it?  Thoughts?  Comments?

Also, I really wanna see the Itty Bitty Titty Committee (if nothing else, it has an awesome name!) but I don't think it'll be released outside film festivals in Oz.  Bollocks.
