Gay men and current issues in HIV prevention: findings from the 2011 Canberra Gay Community Periodic Survey
The results of the 2011 Canberra Gay Community Periodic Survey include several interesting outcomes;
76% of HIV negative respondents had received a HIV test within the last 12 months, the highest rate since the survey began in 2000
There has been a decrease over time in the proportion of men reporting only casual partners and an increase in those reporting monogamous sexual relations
Since 2003 there has been a significant downward trend in the proportion of participants reporting the use of marijuana and ecstasy
Awareness of PEP continues to increase with the current figure being 67% of those surveyed

Dr. Martin Holt is a Senior Research Fellow at the National Centre in HIV Social Research, Australia. He manages the Gay Community Periodic Surveys across Australia, leads the PrEPARE Project, a study of gay and bisexual men’s attitudes to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, and is an investigator on the Sydney study of rapid HIV testing in sexual health clinics.
