A masterpiece of black farce, Loot follows the fortunes of two young thieves. Dennis is a hearse driver for an undertaker. He and Hal rob the bank next door to the funeral parlour and return to Hal's home to hide out with the loot. Hal's mother has just died and the money is hidden in the coffin, while her body keeps turning up around the house. With the arrival of Inspector Truscott, the already thickened plot turns topsy-turvy. Playing with all the conventions of popular farce, Orton creates a world gone mad and examines in detail English attitudes at mid-twentieth century. The play has been called a 'Freudian nightmare', sporting with superstitions about death - and life. It's not tough at all though because the audience will find themselves crying with laughter. Loot was first produced in London in 1966 and remains one of Joe Orton's most potent works.
