University of Canberra students make stand against homophobia

On Wednesday the 15th of February, UC students joint with peers from across the ACT/NSW region to launch the University of Canberra Students' Association campaign for a Queer Space.

A Queer Space is a place on campus where queer identifying students can be safe, and be themselves.  The University of Canberra is one of the only universities in the country who does not have a queer space.

President of the University of Canberra Students' Association Marc Emerson said "A Queer Space is a vital service to all queer students.
It is not easy for many students to come out and be themselves and having a Queer Space makes it that much easier for them.

"These spaces provide a safe and friendly environment for queer students to relax, meet and discuss the issues that affect them, not just as students but as people."

UCSA Sexuality Officer Jessica Rodgers said "We are asking the University to provide a space to ensure that the UC campus remains
safe and inclusive for all students.

"Studies have shown that queer youth are up to six times more likely to commit suicide compared to their heterosexual peers.

"We desperately need a queer space to help queer students come out. Queer Spaces are safe spaces where queer students can feel comfortable to be themselves and not fear queerphobia, which can sometimes take the form of violence; they can seek out information and build strong networks.

"We need this space so we can be part of combating these horrendous suicide figures for queer youth. We also need a space to campaign against homophobia, unjust laws and raise the banner of queer pride."
