Same-sex marriage proposal on air

2DayFM in Sydney is promoting a same-sex marriage between two of their presenters. The illegal marriage is been held to highlight the discrimination of same-sex couples in Australia.

Geoff Field 44, and Jason Kerr 32, met in December 1992, while Geoff was working as a newsreader at 2GB. Jason was working as a producer there at the time. They have been inseparable ever since and will celebrate 13 years together this year.

Geoff was initially shocked by the on-air proposal, but is excited at the prospect of being able to publically announce his commitment to Jason in such a public way. The pair is hoping the move will make it easier for other gay couples to be accepted, as it is still illegal for gay couples to tie the knot in Australia.

Hopefully this ceremony will show people that gay couples are just like everyone else. Geoff said "We don't want special treatment, we just want equality"

"I am wrapped that my family has been so supportive...my mum was almost in tears when I broke the news to her."

"I have also received 100 percent support from my three younger brothers and sisters who are all hoping to be at the wedding ceremony."

Although it is being promoted as "Sydney's First Illegal Gay Wedding", it certainly is not the first, but is likely to be the most widely publicised.
