Some people use homophobic comments to harass or discriminate against others. Homophobic comments or discrimination based on sexuality, sexual orientation or harassment based upon a perception of another's sexual orientation is sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is against the law and the policies of the ACT Department of Education and Training.
ACT government schools are committed to providing safe, inclusive learning environments for children, young people and teachers. All ACT government schools have Anti-sexual Harassment Contact Officers for Students who are able to help students who may feel they have been subjected to harassment, discrimination or bullying on the basis of sexuality or a perception of sexual orientation. These teachers have received specific training on resolving complaints and offering support and advice to students. All complaints are taken seriously and treated confidentially. School counsellors are also available for help and support. Teachers may also approach these officers for advice. The staff Equity and Diversity Contact Officer is available for advice and support for all issues related to discrimination in the workplace.
ACT Teachers need to be aware of their duty of care responsibilities to students of ACT schools and the department commitment to providing safe, inclusive school environments. The Equity Executive Officer, Curriculum Support Section is available to provide advice on all issues associated with countering sexual harassment and homophobia in schools.
