ACT Education Department initiatives for SSAY students - for parents

ACT government schools are committed to providing safe, inclusive learning environments for children and young people.

Some people use homophobic comments to harass or discriminate against others. Homophobic comments or discrimination based on sexuality, sexual orientation or harassment based upon a perception of another's sexual orientation is sexual harassment.

Sexual harassment is against the law and the policies of the ACT Department of Education and Training.

All ACT government schools have Anti-sexual Harassment Contact Officers for Students who are able to help students who may feel they have been subjected to harassment, discrimination or bullying on the basis of sexuality or a perception of sexual orientation. These teachers have received specific training (including Homophobia) to investigate and resolve complaints, and offer support and advice to students. All complaints are taken seriously and treated confidentially. School counsellors are also available for help and support.

If your child, relative or someone you know is experiencing sexual harassment please discuss the matter with the teacher or school immediately. The child's Teacher and/or the Principal are available to provide immediate assistance and support, investigate all allegations and take the necessary action to counter harassment and homophobia.

The Equity Executive Officer, ACT Department of Education and Training is also available to provide information and support on Telephone: 6205 6346

Policies related to sexual harassment can be found on the department website at: www.det.act.gov.au
